Even if Dru Hill is the unofficial successor, the commonalities between the two groups are uncanny. Dru Hill is an American R&B group, whose repertoire included soul, hip hop soul and gospel music.The group was founded in Baltimore in 1992 and is still active. In 1995 Dru Hill picked up where Jodeci left off, robbing the two groups (and their fans) of the opportunity to battle for the #1 Man Band spot. Their style and lyrics were a little more raw and edgier, and their lyrics focused on life lessons like never trusting and big butt and a smile, or that the only place to go after the show, is the afterparty…and then the hotel. The includes BBD, Blackstreet, Dru Hill, Jagged Edge, Jodeci, and Silkk. These groups had the same 3-6 member band without instruments, but could generally sing and/or dance their butts off. From this trend however, emerged a subtrend I like to call Man Bands. These are the widely popular groups most people associate with the term “Boy Band”. Typical boy bands had a formula that was more clean cut, cute, and geared toward teenyboppers with their cutesy lyrics ranging from puppy love to “making” love, a la New Edition, New Kids On The Block, Boyz II Men, Backstreet Boys and N*Sync. With a discography that features four albums and numerous hits, Dru Hill are one of the most iconic acts in R&B music history. Then came the 90’s which ended up being a breeding ground for boy bands. The term “Boy Band” is mainly credited to New Edition who started the modern formula for the trend.
